Aerodynamic State and Loads Estimation Using Bioinspired Distributed Sensing

Flying animals exploit highly nonlinear dynamics to achieve efficient and robust flight control. It appears that the distributed flow force sensor arrays found in flying are instrumental enabling this performance. Using a wind-tunnel wing model instrumented with of strain pressure sensors, we characterized relationship between signals aerodynamic load-related variables. Estimation approaches based on artificial neural networks (ANNs) linear partial least squares were tested different combinations signals. The ANN estimators accurate robust, giving good estimates for all variables, even stall region when array became unsteady. estimator performed well load but was less variables such as angle attack airspeed. Future applications sensing could include enhanced control systems directly use measurements states loads, allowing increase maneuverability improved unmanned aerial vehicles high degrees freedom flexible or morphing wings.
